The
Programme.

Galeria Harmonia today represents the work of fourteen modern Latin American women artists, all active between the wars. Three of them, Kahlo, do Amaral and Forner, anchor the programme and are profiled in depth below. The other eleven are available on request.

No. 01

Frida
Kahlo.

Mexican · 1907 – 1954

Frida Kahlo painted the body as territory. Between the streetcar accident of 1925 and her death in 1954, she built a body of work of little more than one hundred and fifty canvases, mostly small self-portraits, in which physical pain, Mexican identity and desire are bound together without ever yielding to sentimentality.

No. 02

Tarsila
do Amaral.

Brazilian · 1886 – 1973

Tarsila do Amaral gave shape to modern Brazil. From her first Parisian canvases of the 1920s to the Antropofagia cycle, she invented a visual language that digests the European avant-garde to return it as tropical colour, backcountry landscape and monumental figure.

No. 03

Raquel
Forner.

Argentine · 1902 – 1988

Raquel Forner painted catastrophe and survival. From the series The Drama, born of the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, to the post-war Beings of Space canvases, she kept the human figure at the centre of a body of work that refuses both the realism of protest and pure abstraction.
